AT an age when most people have retired, Esther Brauer is looking forward to celebrating 60 years as a postmistress.

The 78-year-old’s achievement is even more unusual as she has spent her career serving customers from an 8ft by 6ft garden shed.

Mrs Brauer has run the tiny post office in remote Kylesku, Sutherland, since 1953. And she has seen plenty of changes, from pen and paper to computers.

She was also the community “postie” for 10 years until the age of 60, delivering mail on an arduous 18-mile route. But she has no intention of retiring and will celebrate six decades in three years’ time.

“It’s a small community which needs a post office,” she said. “If I left I can’t see anyone else taking it over.”

If it wasn’t for the tiny office at Mrs Brauer’s home, locals would face a trip of at least 10 mile
