Royal Mail wants to axe another 1,200 jobs, union leaders warned last night.

Unite, claim the cull of middle managers is to help top brass - including departing chief executive Adam Crozier - hit targets which will trigger huge bonuses.

The Mirror revealed how Mr Crozier, 46, would not start the top job at ITV until he pockets up to £2million from a three-year bonus scheme.

Paul Reuter, Unite national officer, wrote to Mr Crozier yesterday demanding a meeting to discuss the cuts which unions fear will shut offices in cities including Birmingham, Bristol Manchester and Liverpool.

He said: "Royal Mail has a hidden agenda to strip out jobs regardless...to ensure top managers have bigger bonuses."

Royal Mail Group, which includes the Post Office, has lost 60,000 jobs in five years.

Brian Scott, Unite assistant national secretary, fears the latest job losses could cost Royal Mail vital new contracts.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We have never made any secret of the fact that we will have fewer people in future."

On the surface this would look like a dispute of the Managers own making and if it came to IA, which I seriously doubt, as a local one off issue I would not be able support them.

However, with the CWUs stated aim to keep PO and RM in public hands and to get the Gov to take on the Pension liability would we be shooting ourselves in the foot if we did not take the opportunity to show the strength of our feeling on these matters, and tried to link it to the CMAs dispute.

It would also mean if we did support them perhaps if could mean a major change in the them/us politics prevalent in RM at the moment.

However as they are a Strike Breaking Union, with Strike Breakers as members, and with their recent and historical acquiescence to the style and method of change, I could see a CWU/CMA combined picket line being observed by 76% - 90% CWU members and crossed by 99% CMA members.
