ENFIELD Town Post Office has mysteriously closed for a week with bosses claiming it is for a routine “audit”.

The Church Street branch has a notice on the door informing customers that it is “temporarily closed for routine audit purposes”, however, there is no known date as to when it will reopen.

This has raised suspicions the closure might be permanent, something which has been denied by Post Office Ltd.

Angry customers have protested that they will now have to travel nearly a mile to the next nearest post offices in Lancaster Road, Enfield and Queen Anne’s Place, in Bush Hill Park.

Monty Meth, spokesman of the Over-50s Forum, said the closure was a scandal. “The post office has been there for years and years, but it seems the Post Office has washed its hands of it,” he said.

“Telling customers it is closed because of an audit treats people with contempt – there has to be more behind it than that.

A large number of people collect their pension there, so the sheer inconvenience is considerable.

“The post office is supposed to be a public service. They should have brought staff in to take it over, not let it close for so long. They’ve simply walked away from their responsibility.”

In June 2008 six post offices were axed across the borough by Post Office Ltd in a nationwide shake-up.

A Post Office Ltd spokesman said: “Enfield Town post office in Church Street is closed temporarily following an audit. We apologise to customers for any inconvenience this may cause and we hope to be able to re-open this branch as soon as possible. In the meantime, there are a number of alternative branches nearby that customers can use, including two within one mile.”
