Hundreds of unopened letters found dumped in recycling bin

HUNDREDS of unopened letters and parcels have been discovered dumped in a recycling bin in Enfield.

The mail has been stuffed into a green newspaper and magazines container outside Morrisons supermarket, off the A10.

It is all addressed to residential and business premises in Romford, Essex, and all the postage has been paid.

A spokeswoman for the Royal Mail said the company would "urgently investigate" the matter to see if the mail had come from its system.

She added: "Normally if something like this happens, we will immediate forward the mail on as soon as possible, accompanied by a letter of apology for the delay.

"If a postman is responsible for tampering with the mail, which we do not know at this stage, it is an offence for which they would be dismissed.

"We have a zero tolerance policy for this."

Enfield police said they would only investigate the matter if the Royal Mail reported any wrongdoing.

A spokeswoman said: "The onus re the failure of mail to be delivered lies with Royal Mail.

"They will conduct their own initial investigation and if they find that there was any wrongdoing by an individual that constitutes a criminal offence, such as deliberately tampering with or delaying mail, then they will pass their findings on to the police."
