POSTAL workers in Worcester are celebrating after achieving a range of qualifications in English, maths and literacy.

The Learning Centre at Worcester Mail Centre in Wainwright Road, Warndon, was launched 18 months ago to give workers the opportunity to go back to school and pick up vital qualifications.

The facility is equipped with 10 computers with internet access and courses are led by tutors from Worcester College of Technology.

The first set of certificates for NVQ levels one and two have now been handed out with even more people expected to take up the courses over the next 12 months.

Robert Smith, Communications Workers Union (CWU) learning rep, said more than 70 people have signed this year to take advantage of the courses on offer.

New qualifications, including City and Guilds courses in plumbing, DIY and IT, are now available for Royal Mail staff.

Mr Smith added: “We are hoping to make it a yearly event to recognise the fantastic achievements of the workers at the mail centre.”
