THANKFULLY there were no postal strikes over Christmas, so before they return can common sense prevail?

As a regular runner I’ve personally tested out the 4mph average pace at which posties are expected to walk, and it is possible providing there are no inclines, they don’t carry anything heavy and their stride is unbroken by frequent stops.

There is no way the average person carrying a postbag, opening gates and delivering mail can do it. (Cheshire Police can’t walk around the corner to an armed robbery at 4mph).

So, can we dispense with arbitrary notions and replace them with practical solutions.

Do they need to modernise the postal service? Absolutely, you cannot disregard the advance of technology and survive.

Should they be less militant? Given the inept management they’ve suffered so far it’s hard to see the alternative.

I believe the Royal Mail staff would respond better if they had senior managers with knowledge and experience of the service.

Should Royal Mail be privatised? Not unless we want it decimated, hawked around, and sold off to foreign speculators.

The Royal Mail is more than a postal service, it’s an institution. To the housebound and elderly it’s a lifeline.

Of course the world is changing at it must adapt accordingly, but let’s not lose it.

It provides fantastic value for money, which you quickly discover when you use another service. (How many carriers will deliver letters anywhere in the UK for 30p? If you live in a remote rural area some carriers won’t deliver them at all). If we have to pay more, so be it.

Better management, more flexibility from the staff and public recognition of Royal Mail’s unique service would go a long way to ensuring its future.

Sounds great, but RML/HMG are in love with graduate managers and private sector bods and struggle to understand that is not a sustainable/viable management model.

The problem with experienced managers AND experienced senior union officials is that the job has changed so much in the last 10 years is their experience really relevant?

This is so true. I did my first stint as a postie in the mid eighties.
When I came back 11 years ago the only thing that had changed was the Special Deliveries.
Since then - so many changes it's unbelievable.
