Mercedes driver hunted over front garden crash

A DRIVER smashed into a wall and abandoned his car in a front garden after he lost control on the A40.

Police are hunting the motorist after the accident on Friday January 15, when a silver Mercedes hit a Royal Mail lorry before careering into the garden in the Western Avenue, Acton, at the junction of Allan Way, at about 10pm.

Neighbour Joan Corani, 73, said: "It it hadn't been for the thickness of the wall the car would've gone into the house. The driver of the Royal Mail lorry said he saw the car acting strangely. It nearly hit a white van as he tried to come off the Western Avenue, came into contact with the lorry and went into the garden.
"The lorry driver said he asked him for his details and he said: 'I'm going.' He said what about his car and the man said: 'that's all right, it can stay there.' It was very difficult getting the car out, they were there for ages, until about 1.15am.

"It is not the first time we've had accidents at this spot. I've asked Transport for London (TfL) why they can't put crash barriers all along the road instead of just at a small section."

A TfL spokesman said: "TfL is currently carrying out a range of safety improvements along the Western Avenue to reduce the number of collisions which occur along this section of the road. These include improvements to the road surface and installing reflectors on the existing pedestrian guardrail.

"Crash barriers are located along the TfL road network where the speed limit is 50mph or more, and where there is a history of crashes involving a vehicle that has come off the carriageway."
