Dog mess vandals shut postbox

A postbox in Bath has been sealed off after postmen collecting from it discovered dog mess among the letters.

The problem was first spotted last year and a warning notice was put on the box in Widcombe stating that it would be shut if the tasteless vandalism continued.

And months later vandals are still abusing the facility, which has left Royal Mail with no choice but to temporarily close the box in Lyncombe Hill and suspend further collections from it.

Councillor Ian Gilchrist (Lib Dem, Widcombe) said he was disappointed that the warning sign appeared to have backfired.

He said: "Residents mentioned their annoyance to me but the hope was that it was a one-off.

"I will be in contact with the Royal Mail to discuss the extent of the problem and what can be done about it."

Vice-chairman of the Widcombe Association Paddy Doyle, said a similar incident had recently occurred on Widcombe Hill.

He added: "Local postboxes are a precious public amenity which we can ill afford to lose.

"We hope that Widcombe residents will be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour in the vicinity of postboxes."

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said the behaviour was unacceptable.

She said: "We have been forced to temporarily seal the postbox at Lyncombe Hill, after dog excrement was deposited in the box on a number of occasions.

"We are also carefully monitoring services at the Widcombe Hill postbox, which has been similarly targeted.

"Clearly, the problem we have is unacceptable to our collections people and our customers whose mail is at risk of contamination."

She urged residents to be vigilant and to let them know immediately via the firm's customer services helpline on 08457 740 740 if they suspect or see anyone tampering with the Widcombe Hill box.

Anyone telephoning should ask for the details to be passed on to the Collections Manager at Bath Delivery Office who will follow up their call.
