A ROYAL Mail postman slipped and badly hurt his back while delivering post in the severe weather conditions, it has been confirmed.

The man, named locally as Matthew Smith, was doing his rounds in the Tonyrefail area of the Rhondda on Tuesday, January 12, when the accident happened.

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said: “We can confirm that a postman slipped and injured himself while out on delivery in the Bryn Golau area of Tonyrefail last week during the extreme weather conditions.

“He was taken to hospital and treated for back injuries before being sent home and his delivery office manager has been in regular contact with him since the incident.

“A full health and safety investigation is currently ongoing and the postman will be supported by Royal Mail throughout his recovery.

“All staff are fully briefed daily about health and safety and taking care before going out on delivery in bad weather and are advised not to take unnecessary risks.

“The postman was wearing a Royal Mail uniform and the correct Royal Mail footwear at the time of the incident.

“The recent extreme weather conditions across South Wales caused major difficulties for our staff as we attempted to keep the mail moving and deliver and collect mail where it was possible to do so.”

So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

Will the CWU also do a investigation into this.?

From the sound of it the Poor guy was lucky ,sounds like he had no broken bones .

I wonder if a proper risk assement of his round or any other round in his office was done by Managers that day,to see if it was safe to deliver in.

The normal procudure in RM in adverse weather conditions like snow and ice, is due to the severe weather Area Manager and Many DOMS work from home as it is to dangerous or difficult to make it into the office, but they then will issue instuctions that Delivery staff should go out and deliver, regardless of conditions.

Once Again when the Deivery staff needed the CWU BIG HITTERS (If their is such a think now) where were they.

This Poor guy has gone to work ,been sent out in unsafe conditions, most likely without ice shoes,or other protective clothing for this weather, carrying a heavy bag even at 10kg in icey conditions is dangerous .He has had hospital treatment, lost time of work ,possibly losss of income,he he does SA or overtime regularly.

His sickness days could count against him if he has further time off.A bad back can take ages to heal.

Hope the result of the HSE investigation are made made Public, and lessons can be learnt from this, with formal guide lines from all parties concerning Deliveries in these conditions.
If this Guy had hit his head or face on the ice ,It does not bear thinking about.

I HAVE ASKED THE QUESTION PREVIOUS AND WILL ASK THE QUESTION AGAIN,

WHERE IS THE NATIONAL VOICE OF THE CWU CONCERNING DELIVERY IN ICE AND SNOW?

I HOPE THIS GUY GETS BETTER SOON BUT ONLY RETURNS TO WORK WHEN FULLY FIT ,their by the grace of GOD go I!
