This is the couple who stole thousands of pounds from a village post office where they worked.

Robert Humphrey, 52, who worked as a sub postmaster of Bradwell Post Office, near Great Yarmouth, and his estranged wife Jacqueline, 46, have both admitted theft between April 2006 and April 2008.

However, their case was adjourned yesterday because of a dispute over the amount of money involved.

The pair are accused of stealing more than £76,000 but Robert Humphrey claims the amount was around £40,000.

The couple were due to be sentenced yesterday at Norwich Crown Court but the case has been adjourned for six weeks until February 1 so further investigations can be made by the defence.

Ian James, mitigating for Robert Humphrey, said his client accepted he had stolen money but added: "He has always said he feels the figures that the Post Office rely on are wrong. He does not profess to know how much money was taken, he has never tried to lie his way out. His wife was taking money and he was covering up for her."

Mr James said there were questions being asked about the accuracy of the accounting system for the Post Office and he said he wanted to be provided with further details of how the figure of £76,000 had been obtained.

Peter Glenser, mitigating for Jacqueline Humphrey, said: "She wants to be sentenced as soon as possible. She has had a pretty rough time of it, she does not know how much money was taken."

He said she had provided money for the business from the sale of her home following a previous divorce.

"She then had nothing to do with the running of the business, the post master was her husband and he dealt with the finances," Mr Glenser added.

Recorder Christopher Makey adjourned the case until February 1 and said: "These are very important considerations. The Post Office should provide a breakdown and explanation as to how the figures have been arrived at by the auditors."

Previously the couple were warned they could face jail over the theft.

If the figgures are as accurate as the questionable ' mail ' figgures no wonder the judge wants a complete breakdown of them and i'd guess there will be some discrepencies on 'royal fails' behalf ......but it doesn't alter the fact they stole the money so should pay the penalty

I used to go in there sometimes. The wife liked her drink. They used to argue with each other quite a bit too, if I remember.
The bloke seemed really nice though.

The post office shelves were always empty too, come to think about it. :funneh
