It is our democratic right to protest

IN reply to Donal O’Hanlon, Lib Dem candidate (November 30).

He stated that the only place for Royal Mail privatisation to be addressed is in parliament. He forgets one very important principle, and that is for a democracy to be vibrant and healthy. The right to protest and campaign against issues is a fundamental right in our British democratic system.

I can assure him that I do understand the concept of parliament, and that is why the Green Party will be standing two candidates in the forthcoming general election, myself in Bolton South East, and Rachael Mann in Bolton West. The Green Party will be fielding candidates in hundreds of constituencies across the country.

Mr O’Hanlon says that the Lib Dem’s plans for Royal Mail is to sell off 49 per cent of the shares. Who would take up this offer? Big business no doubt. This is privatisation, and this goes against public opinion. One poll in The Bolton News itself a few months ago showed an overwhelming majority against privatisation.

The postal workers through its union the CWU are opposed to privatisation, but are in favour of a modernised, fully public top quality service. Thus giving the public a service that it deserves. And this must be done through proper consultation and negotiations with management and the union, and I hope that the current talks are successful.

The Green party supports a proper publicly funded Royal Mail as do the postal workers. We will be campaigning in the election for this.

We will also be supporting workers’ rights by calling for the repeal of Thatcher’s anti-trade union legislation. These are issues that I and the Green Party are proud to be championing. The alternative to the tired old policies of the three main parties.
