Royal Mail depot in south Coventry gets planning permission

PLANS for a Royal Mail depot in the south of Coventry were granted permission by councillors yesterday.

The site, at the Orchard Retail Park, off London Road, is one of two in the city to replace the Bishop Street sorting office, which is set to close under reorganisation plans by Royal Mail.

The new depot will have 110 car parking spaces, including 49 for delivery vans and 61 for staff and visitors.

It is expected to employ 250 staff, working three different shifts throughout the day.

Members of the council’s planning committee welcomed the plan but expressed disappointment at Royal Mail’s decision to close the existing sorting office.

Committee chairman Coun Christian Cliffe said: “It was a disappointment losing the sorting office to Northampton but we hope this will make the best of a very bad situation.”

What are the odds that it's too small and not fit for purpose and that within a few months of opening they'll be saying that they need more space.
