SIR – Seventy six per cent of CWU members voted for strike action. We need to understand why.

They are paid £347 for 40 hours work (£80 a week under the UK average manual workers wage). So delivery workers cannot be accused of greed.

Of the £350m Royal Mail Group profit, most went on excessive bonus payments to senior managers. In return for an increased workload with 30 per cent fewer staff the Royal Mail workers’ wage reward was zero. And now workers are being asked to sell future full-time jobs, holiday and pension rights so that profits can rise higher, with Lord Mandelson and David Cameron focussing on further privatisation in the future.

The CWU demand is for a shorter working week to protect full time working against the part time onslaught. Part time working means part time pension rights, part time holiday and sick pay, part time earnings and part time commitment to the service.

Based on management’s behaviour since 2007 it is not surprising that posties have no trust in the sincerity or honesty of the current leaders of Royal Mail.

Have the half year accounts been released yet to show this, also group profit was 321 million of which RML only contributed 58 million.


That 58 millioj is the problem as RM Group /RML top brass want to return RML back to its glory days of providing profits in excess of 300 million to the RM group tally.

RML has slipped in terms of its contribution to group profits the workers are expected to rectify that even though we did not cause RML to slip.

It is because managers focus purley on RML profits and not group profits that they are desperatley trying to cut costs.

Is it not time for the Group to support us, as so often in the past RML profits have kept the group afloat.
