There were red faces all round at downmarket red top The Sun after it was revealed that a story printed yesterday was a complete fabrication.

The tabloid had claimed that Communication Workers Union (CWU) deputy leader Dave Ward had a "no junk mail" sticker on his letterbox.

And the paper claimed that Mr Ward's postwoman didn't back the strike.

But everything printed was a lie and the CWU was quick to respond.

"We have proved beyond any doubt that neither the letterbox nor the house was Dave Ward's," said head of communications Kevin Slocombe.

"I can also confirm that no such sticker is present on his property.

"In addition, the postwoman named and pictured is not his postwoman and nor is the person pictured who it claims to be."

It seems the Royal Mail isn't the only company having trouble with unreliable agency workers.

The Sun bought the story from a press agency - but just as Royal Mail is failing to check agency workers' criminal records, the paper failed to check whether any of the "facts" in its story were true.

The Sun's publisher News International refused to comment on the allegations today - but in an apparent admission of guilt the story had been removed from the paper's website.

The CWU confirmed that it was considering taking Rupert Murdoch's bungling lackeys to the Press Complaints Commission.
