Union leaders last night told Royal Mail they were pressing for an early agreement in the postal dispute and declared: "We don't want to disrupt Christmas deliveries."
The peace plea came as nearly 80,000 posties stopped work yesterday, crippling mail deliveries across the UK.
A Communication Workers Union spokesman said: "We're not going to let this drag on over Christmas. The next 48 hours are crucial."
The CWU leadership will meet tomorrow before holding further talks with Royal Mail in the row over working practices, jobs and modernisation.
The union plans a 24-hour walkout next Friday and the following Monday by all 121,000 postal members unless there is breakthrough in talks.
