Royal Mail faces the first all-out strike by every worker next Friday if the current deadlock remains.
The walkout by all 120,000 postal staff will be backed up with another the following Monday.
A source revealed: "The union wants to demonstrate that while it's willing to negotiate, it is not prepared to let things drag on forever."
The threat of a fresh wave of walkouts came as 77,000 delivery workers began a 24-hour strike at 4am today. Royal Mail admitted three days of strikes this week would leave a backlog of 35 million items.

The two sides met briefly with TUC leader Brendan Barber yesterday in an attempt to find a breakthrough. Mr Barber added: "Both sides have agreed not to comment on negotiations."
But Royal Mail condemned the union's "destructive" strike action. Mark Higson, boss of Royal Mail Letters, said: "Its irresponsible behaviour underlines how little it cares about the future of the postal service."
