Harborough - No strike for our postmen

POSTMEN in Harborough will not be joining the proposed national strikes today or tomorrow because the town's depot is already working towards the company's pay, modernisation and working conditions agreement.

The 60 posties who work from the Royal Mail depot on the Riverside Industrial Estate off Rockingham Road will be carrying out their delivery rounds as normal for the next two days despite thousands of others striking across the nation.

Earlier this month the Communications and Workers Union announced its plans to take action against Royal Mail in a dispute over an agreement made in 2007 about pay, equipment modernisation and flexible working hours.

But a Royal Mail worker at the Harborough depot, who did not want to be named, said: “We’ve been working towards the agreement since it was put in place in 2007 so we already have the ideals that other postmen are striking for.

“We have flexible working conditions and soon we’ll be getting new machinery in so we’ll all be working as normal.”

The town and surrounding villages will not be affected by the strike, but Lutterworth and its villages can expect some disruption tomorrow when the majority of their 30 postmen are expected to strike.

This week Royal Mail said it is recruiting up to 30,000 fully vetted temporary staff nationally to help keep the mail moving during the strike and to help deal with the Christmas rush.
