UK walkout vote expected

Post office unions are expected to announce today that workers have voted for a national strike.

The Communication Workers Union will announce the result of a ballot of 120,000 of its members at the Royal Mail, with officials confident of achieving backing for walkouts across the UK.

Regional strikes have continued this week, with the union claiming that cost-saving measures imposed by bosses are cutting jobs, reducing wages and damaging services.

Royal Mail has denied the claims and says it is only pressing ahead with agreed modernisation of the business.

The CWU's Dave Ward said: "Postal workers are striking to defend future services as well as for jobs and modern conditions."

Online retailer Amazon yesterday said it would use Royal Mail's rivals if Christmas deliveries looked like they might be disrupted.

Meanwhile, British Airways staff moved closer to a strike over job cuts yesterday - raising the spectre of airport chaos over Christmas.

Union chiefs are demanding a ballot on December industrial action and accused bosses of wanting a "premium airline on no-frills airline wage".

Ba is demanding a twoyear pay freeze and wants to cut cabin crew from 14,000 to 12,300.
