Shocked pensioner is drowning in water bills

A pensioner from Northampton claims he was left drowning in water bills after almost 130 were delivered to his home in two days ... but not one of them appeared to be his.
David Holt was stunned last Friday when his neighbour handed him about 60 bills from Anglian Water – with Northampton Borough Council as the addressee – which the postman could not fit through the letterbox of his flat in Cardigan Close, Dallington.

But on Saturday, the postman turned up with even more – giving a total of 127.

The 65-year-old said: "I couldn't believe it. Most people are a bit worried when even one water bill lands on the doormat. How do you think I felt when I got more than a hundred?

"Someone's made a mistake somewhere but nobody seems to be able to tell me what to do with them all. I'm almost drowning in water bills and the water company don't think it's a problem.

"I wouldn't mind so much but Anglian Water haven't even sent me my own bill; I've just got everyone else's."

Mr Holt said he was now concerned about how to dispose of the letters as it was believed they all have the addresses of individuals on them which he fears could lead to identity fraud if they were found.

Anglian Water advised Mr Holt to shred them to prevent them falling into the wrong hands, but he does not own a shredder.

However, experts at the Community Law Service, said it did not believe any significant fraud was possible.

Anglian Water told the Chron yesterday that the bills were probably sent because of an administrative error. A spokeswoman said: "It seems to be a mistake by our computer system.

"We liaise with local authorities about the status of tenants in council properties, whether they have moved out for example.

"It looks like we've got the borough council's address mixed up with one of their tenants'."

The water company said it would send an employee to collect the letters from Mr Holt.
