ROMEC - Devastated cleaner will fight for her job

A DEVASTATED Peterborough cleaner has vowed to fight for her job – after being told she was too old to keep working.

Grandmother Gina Nott returned to work from a holiday in Greece two days before her 65th birthday – but instead of being wished many happy returns, she was shown the door.

She was a cleaner for Romec, which is partly owned by Royal Mail, and was stunned to have to say goodbye to her colleagues of eight years at the Royal Mail depot in Papyrus Road.

Speaking from her home in Werrington Grove, she said the news had ruined her special birthday weekend.

Mrs Nott said: "I wouldn't mind if it was anything to do with my work but it isn't.

"It appears purely based on my age and I don't want to give up working, I am not ready to."

She said she was asked in 2008 if she wanted to work after she was 65 and she said yes, but with reduced hours.

She said: "They reduced my hours and I was even fitted for a new uniform a few weeks ago.

"This has come out of the blue, I could not believe it when I was called in and told it was my last day.

"I feel I have been discriminated against and it ruined my party, I just wanted to cry all the time. I will be lost without my job."

Mrs Nott, who gets up at 4am to do her shift, said she would be appealing against her dismissal and her husband, Steve, who works as a postman at the depot, said he would try and start a petition for his wife's reinstatement.

A spokesman for Romec said: "We do not comment on private matters."

Age Concern campaign
Campaigners fighting to overturn a ruling which compels people to stop working at 65 have suffered a blow in their battle.

Age Concern had gone to the European Court of Justice, in Luxembourg, to overturn the ruling that means compels people to stop work at or after 65 without compensation.

However, the charity's claim was rejected. Head of public policy at Age Concern and Help the Aged Andrew Harrop pledged the fight will go on.

"Today's ruling does not spell the end of our campaign to win justice for older workers – in fact‚ we will be stepping up our fight to get this outdated legislation off the statute book."

How can the Gov't and the pension Dept. tell us that on one hand we WILL have to wait until we are 67 or abouts to claim our state pensions but on the other hand legislation like this states that we cannot work past 65
I don't want to work past 65 myself but shouldn't someone be thinking this one through!!

i would't have used the word devastated. but i know exactly what she meant, as everybody uses the word in everyday life and changes the perspective of the word.

death is devastating. that is eternal.
