Staff arrive to find post office door open

STAFF at the city's post office were left out in the cold when they arrived at work because of a burglary scare.
Workers arrived at the Cowgate building to see the back doors open and the alarm blaring at around 8.10am yesterday.

They called police, who told them officers could not attend immediately as they were dealing with a collision elsewhere in the city.

Fearing there had been a break-in over the weekend, the worried workers waited for 40 minutes outside until officers got there at 8.50am to check the building over.

But when police examined the scene, there was no sign of a raid.

It is believed the door had not been closed properly, which activated the alarm system.

Staff said the cleaner may have been the last person to have left the building.

Manager of the branch Robert Swift said: “It’s strange that the door should be open. Whether it had been open all weekend, we don’t know. The last person to leave is the cleaner.”

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said she could not comment on security arrangements.

Police had originally classed the incident as a business burglary when the call was received at 8.10am, but after discovering the open door, they confirmed no burglary had taken place.

A spokeswoman said the incident had been logged as a “grade B” incident, to which police need to respond in around half an hour.

She added: “Police give the best indication they can as to when they will get there. If it had been a burglary in action, then it would have been classed as an A grade, and someone would have had to get there immediately.

“We correctly graded it as a B grade and we dealt with it appropriately. We would attend any report of any concern like that.”

But that's we're given brooms for sweeping up as we're going round.
