ROYAL Mail workers in Middlesbrough were today holding their fourth day of strike action in a long-running row over jobs, pay and services.

Delivery staff at the Cannon Park depot started their 24-hour walk-out at 3am this morning. The move is part of a fresh wave of strike action taking place across the UK this week.

The Communication Workers Union is balloting all its postal members for a national strike after accusing the Royal Mail of cutting jobs and pay and hitting services. The result is due on October 8.

Yesterday Royal Mail issued a fresh plea for postal strikes to be called off after announcing that major efficiency changes planned for this year will be achieved by next week.

Meanwhile a debate at Labour’s annual conference about the future of the Royal Mail is set to be heard tomorrow - calling on the Government to tackle the Royal Mail’s huge pension deficit.

MORE than 700 postal workers have staged a further 24 hour walkout in protest of changes to working conditions.

Distribution workers at Coventry’s sorting office in Bishop Street and at Priory Terrace, Leamington, walked out from 6am yesterday in an ongoing dispute has continued to escalate as part of a national dispute over pay, job cuts and working conditions.

Postman Gary Smith, aged 33, of Stoke Heath, was among 20 workers who stood outside the office in Bishop Street with placards while passing drivers sounded their horns.

He said: “We’re having to share out more duties for no extra pay.

“We’re fighting for recognition and fighting for our jobs. We’re the ones behind profits Royal Mail are making.”

Father-of-two, Seth Bailey, of Green Lane, Finham, a postman for 25 years, said: “One minute the management wanted to get rid of me without any discussion and the next minute I’m given two jobs to do.

"With less people jobs are being shared out. I’m now doing the job of another person’s workload.”

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) is balloting members for a national strike, with a result expected next week.

Royal Mail said mail in the postcode areas CV1 to CV8 and CV31 to CV33 would be affected.

POSTAL workers in Ely started another 24-hour strike on Tuesday as the nationwide dispute with Royal Mail continued into its second month.

Around 80 staff at the Ely delivery office will take part in the action along with workers in Soham, Isleham and Haddenham.

The strikes, the third such day of action to have taken place in East Cambridgeshire, comes amid continued nationwide action in protest at Royal Mail's programme of modernisation. All UK postal workers have been sent ballots on a national strike.

DELIVERIES of mail in Nottingham could be hit by postal strikes today.

Van drivers across the local postal network are on strike as part of a long-running dispute over jobs and pay.

Members of the Communication Workers' Union (CWU) are walking out for 24 hours as part of a fresh wave of postal strikes taking place this week across the country.

Mail also went unsorted yesterday at delivery offices in Eastwood and Nottingham because of the industrial action.

In total, more than 15,000 workers are expected to walk out nationally.

The CWU is also balloting all its postal members for a national strike of all 130,000 postal workers in Royal Mail.

The union has accused the Royal Mail of cutting jobs and pay and hitting services.

The ballot closes on October 8.

OSTAL workers in Ely and Cambridge are staging another strike today.

Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU)will strike for 24 hours.

Its members employed at Cambridge delivery office in Henley Road and Ely delivery office, along with the villages of Soham, Haddenham and Isleham, will take part in the industrial action.

Union spokesman Steve Butts said: "Our members have been left with no other real alternative but to take this action, as Royal Mail plan from Monday to begin to introduce un-agreed changes."

It is the latest in a series of strikes being taken nationwide in protest at changes being implemented by Royal Mail.

In total, 12,000 workers will walk out from depots including those in Cambridge, London, Middlesbrough, Portsmouth, Birmingham, Bristol, Nottingham, Glasgow and Swindon.

The strikes, which began in August, have created a massive backlog of undelivered mail. The union claims there is a 20 million post mountain in London.

All postal workers have been balloted on a national strike, with the result of the ballot due early in October.
