Scots face further postal strikes as staff consider walkout

A NEW round of postal strikes is due to hit parts of Scotland tomorrow as staff are balloted for a UK-wide walkout.
Industrial action involving some 14,000 staff will include Ayrshire and Johnstone, Renfrewshire, on Monday night and Tuesday.

However, the Royal Mail said a simultaneous strike at the main Glasgow mail centre had been called off.

Officials said mail should be delivered normally tomorrow in areas of Scotland not having a local holiday.

But they warned customers that deliveries in areas affected by the strikes may be delayed on Wednesday.

The Royal Mail reported delays yesterday in Glasgow and London, while there was also industrial action in Edinburgh, Falkirk, Dunfermline and Cowdenbeath.

The Communication Workers' Union, locked in a wide-ranging dispute with employers, is balloting all its postal members for a national strike after accusing the Royal Mail of cutting jobs and pay and hitting services. The result is due early next month.

The union also says the Royal Mail intends to cut jobs without agreement, a charge the company denies.

Talks between the two sides will be held this week.
