UK Postal Union Steps Up Pressure As Talks Fail

The Communication Workers Union is to hand a giant postcard to UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown this coming Thursday as part of its "Keep The Post Public" campaign. The union, which is fiercely against ongoing plans by the government to part privatise the company as soon as it is able to secure a strategic parner for the Royal Mail, is continuing to exert pressure on both the government and the Labour Party.

The union has also submitted an Emergency Resolution to the Labour Party Conference, presently being considered by the Conference Arrangements Committee as to whether it will be tabled or not.

The CWU is also balloting 121,000 postal workers, urging them to support national strike action which would see mail collection and deliveries grind to a standstill. CWU leader Billy Hayes, described the ballot as a referendum on the future of the Royal mail:

"Its about putting pressure on government and not allowing it to walk away from its responsibilies, whether on pensions or regulation" he said.

Dave Ward, CWU deputy secretary accused Royal Mail of using volume decline, which he said had yet to be presented to, and validated by the union, as an excuse to move forward change on its own terms without the negotiation it had promised in the 2007 agreement. He said the union had explored every avenue in trying to reach an acceptable agreement and that it was essential that postal workers voted 'Yes' in the current ballot:

"Its about issues that are fundamental to the future of postal workers and the future of the company. Its about whether we will have sustainable full time jobs, and whether we're going to be able to deal with change in an agreed way or whether the company continues to impose change by dictat which will result in a part time industry and compulsory redundancies."

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Don't worry about Hellmail they are the equivalent of "Münchener Beobachter" for RM managers.
