THREE thugs who beat up a postman as he set off for work are today behind bars.
Ex-paratrooper Mark Love was barely able to walk after he was attacked by the gang, after one of them stood in front of his car while he was driving, and he got out to confront them.
The 51-year-old managed to briefly get away from the trio and ran towards a nearby garage during the “vicious and sustained” assault.
But they caught up with him and attacked him again, at one point throwing a heavy plant pot at him, in Nant y Glyn Avenue, Colwyn Bay at 6am last July 19.
Mr Love was treated in hospital for a broken nose, injured eye and severe bruising on his right leg, which left him off work and struggling to walk.
Yesterday at Caernarfon Crown Court Jamie Simon Hughes, 21, of Princess Edward Avenue, Rhyl was jailed for two years for his part in the incident, plus an additional one year sentence for a separate attack on his girlfriend.
His co-accused, Andrew James Aldred, 21, of Ffordd Euryn, Mochdre was locked up for 18 months and Richard Lee Powell, also 21, of Park Road, Colwyn Bay, for 10 months.
Sentencing, Judge Merfyn Hughes QC said the attack was “entirely unprovoked” and sustained.
He told the three: “You all acted in a vicious manner. There was no reason at all for you to do this. This clearly crosses the custody threshold.”
David Maidstone, prosecuting, said Mr Love was punched about the head but he managed to escape.
“He ran down the street towards a petrol station but he was followed down the street. He was caught and the attack continued. One of the group, later identified as Aldred, threw a plant pot at him. Fortunately that missed.
“He was able to get to the petrol station and raise the alarm.”
All three were arrested and denied the offences.
But a jury found all three guilty and they appeared for sentence yesterday.
Hughes, Mr Maidstone added, was to be sentenced for assaulting his girlfriend in a separate incident in September last year. The court heard she had been repeatedly punched about the head and knocked unconscious.
Andrew Green, for Hughes, said realised he needed help to deal with his problems.
Aldred, his barrister Simon Mintz said, realised it was a nasty offence and that a jail sentence would be imposed.
Sion ap Mihangel, for Powell, said he accepted it was an unsavoury and unpleasant attack and was now disgusted by what had happened.
A Royal Mail spokesman said: “This was a particularly violent attack on a postman on his way to work.
“Thankfully it was an isolated incident and whilst such incidents are rare, we would always advise our people to be vigilant at all times and to report anything suspicious to the police.”

Re: Thugs jailed for battering postman in North Wales
It doesn't mention why. Was it a "mugging" or a domestic type attack? They're spending millions on re-developing Colwyn Bay/Old Colwyn/Rhyl. What a waste of money as it's full of dossers, down-and-outs who don't want to work. Old seaside town reliant on tourism, funfairs of the 60's, really sad place.
I've run many courses at the local leisure centre/school and all round that area, wouldn't go there at night...unless you want aggro.
Local police having real trouble keeping it under control. Was mentioned as the new "Wild West" recently I believe.
Drugs, alcohol, high unemployment, knife attacks, muggings...the list goes on and on.
Saw one guy kick his dog because it stopped to sniff a lamp post. Full force, right in the ribs, so I followed him home.
Knocked his door, kiddie answered. Spoke to the guy, told him what I'd seen. Denied having a dog. Dog was barking behind him!!!
Told him I'd report him to RSPCA, and also said I'd give him a fecking good kicking if I saw him do that again.
He almost began crying, pleading with me not to report him. ( Was probably a DSS Deadbeat ) Total fecking tosser. The place is full of 'em.
There are some nice people living there too, before everyone starts moaning about me being a bigot! But not as many as the sh***s...
It's not the locals, it's the newcomers who seem to be the culprits overall.

Welcome to modern Britain. The whole country is full of scum and that's a fact. The education system teaches kids nothing about how to become a well-rounded, content human being but plenty about History, Geography, Chemistry and Maths. What good does it all do? Means they can work out how much giro money they have left for the off-licence.
On a lighter note how about RM's sensible advice-
'whilst such incidents are rare, we would always advise our people to be vigilant at all times and to report anything suspicious to the police.'
Hello, is that the Police? Yeah There are 3 suspicious looking guys beating me around the head with sticks just thought you might be interested.
