THE union boss behind the postal strike is on an annual salary package of nearly £100,000, four times the national average pay.

Firebrand Billy Hayes, general secretary of the Communication Workers Union, has enjoyed regular pay rises over the last six years.

His salary package of £97,647 including benefits has risen overall by 14 per cent while the workers he represents are threatened with a pay freeze.

Conservative MP Michael Fallon said: “For Mr Hayes it’s a case of ‘I’m all right Jack’.”

Last week the union began voting in a national strike ballot and a decision is expected on October 8.

Billy Hayes has expressed fury at the £1.3million package of Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier.

A spokesman for the CWU said: “His salary is a drop in the ocean compared to Adam Crozier.”

Billy may be getting 100,000 but he is fighting tooth and nail for are jobs. Not like Adam Croizer and his 3 million which who is wrecking Royal Mail.

We should ask ourselves if we need both Billy and Dave and save ourselves a few bob - let's not forget the perks on top of the salary, such as allowances for travel, entertaining (a point of which, does he claim for junkets to do with affairs outside of official union business, like stop the war and free nicaraguan sheep farmers?), interest free loans, accommodation - all in all he will be on a damn site more than £100k.

A fair point is the percentage increases he's had in comparison to us and really what bearing has what Crozier got to do with what we pay Billy - his salary comes out of our pocket - Croziers comes out of the millions provided by our customers - he doesn't deserve it either, but then I'm not paying him.

My graft is a by product, the cash comes from the customer whereas Billy gets his straight from my wage packet and erm erm frankly I don't think I get value for money,

Good point, the cash Adam creams off from your labour never makes it into your wage packet at all,so you never get a choice of wether or not you want to line his fat pockets,and he can up his bonus ;pension and pay at the stroke of a pen and take even more out of your pay packet. Couldnae give a flying friar tuck what the Daily Mail has to say about anything but if Billy Hayes is on a £100,000 a year its about time something was done about that! I mean who on earth decided thats what our our union leader should be paid? and this is the guy who asked us to vote for the 2007 pay and modernisation agreement!!

These kinda people have been lining their pockets for decades,it reminds me of Donald Dewar,another esteemed defender of
ordinary working people(why do so many on the left call working people ordinary,im bloody extraordinary i just get paid rubbish!)
anyway Dewar was aye trying to stop bin men or nurses or whoever from going on strike,and he died with £2.5 million quid in the bank and a whack o shares in railtrack!

After his death the powers that be decided to erect a memorial statue of Donald Dewar,needless to say its been vandalised a couple of times!

Royal Mail Dispute : Keep The Post Public

As Royal Mail's arguments become weaker, the employer and the media are seeking to undermine the credibility of National Officers of the CWU. It is anticipated that these attacks will continue.

Recently much has been made of the salary of the General Secretary and other senior Officers, in particular the Deputy General Secretary (Postal).

The facts are that the salary of the General Secretary is published each year to Branches, most recently in LTB 487/09. Together with this, it is a requirement by law that all General Secretaries' salaries and benefits are published and made available to the public. The Union complies with this completely. The Annual Report of the Certification Officer 2008/2009 published the salary of the General Secretary, a copy of the relevant schedule is attached and the full document can be downloaded at http://www.certoffice.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It will also be recalled that the General Secretary, in 2004, announced to Annual Conference that he would not be taking a pay rise that year and nor did he.

This year no pay rise has been awarded to any CWU National Officer, nor has the General Secretary or the Deputy General Secretary (Postal) received a 5% increase in pay as has been suggested by Royal Mail and their confederates.

Staff at CWU Headquarters are represented by the GMB and negotiations with that independent Union are continuing.
