“20m mail items backed up in London alone”

by Sue Bailey

The Communication Workers’ Union has said that the current round of industrial action has caused a back-up of mail “bigger than at the height of the national strike of 2007″. Twenty million items are said to be awaiting delivery in London alone, and delivery delays of over a week are being reported. Royal Mail has said that the figure is nine million nationwide, of which two-thirds is in the capital.

The union has now begun ballotting its members on national strike action. Royal Mail has called the strike “wholly irresponsible”.

Ah… that will be why I have had over 30 emails this week of items not received then!

I just don’t understand strike action it will damage the business you work for and solve nothing!!!

Pretty much our whole business depends on Royal Mail and it’s workers and in these times we need to pull togther rather than help ruin each other!

We’re getting lots of customers asking where their goods are, and we’re already getting bad feedback because of slow delivery.

The problem I have with the CWU, is that they seam proud of the amount of undelivered mail, they have caused! This round of strike action and maybe a national strike will not be supported by the public, which is who they need, more fool them.

These strikes have prompted us to use a local courier company a lot more than we ever used to – their prices are surprisingly cheap.

And guess what? Some of our regular customers have asked us to switch permanently to that method, even when the strikes are over. If there are others like us doing the same thing, then that means less profits for Royal Mail, and presumably more redundancies.

Smooth move, CWU.

Some light at the end of the tunnel, maybe, for sellers of retro items – they can market late delivery as the 1970s experience

Ballot papers are being issued the CWU members from today. I would imagine by post? I wonder how the current postal strikes will affect the results? literally!

Right when DSRs are about to hit the critical period for the Top Seller program Royal Mail decide to go on strike.

Great!

I cant believe people like this striking when there are so many unemployed and its rising. I wonder how many school leavers fancy doing a few post runs.

Perks: If your lucky you might get a red van and free black/white cat.

I cant believe they are even trying to argue their job is hard and not well paid.

Ive a friend who was a postie. Fair enough he was up at 6am to begin work but he was finished every day at 2.30pm. He was taking home after tax well over £300 per week and doing some saturday mornings too.

Each postie was also given the chance to earn more money on the side on their runs delivering leaflets and advertising things with the post they delivered at around 1p per delivery. If your delivering 5 pieces of junk mail per house and doing quite a lot of houses every week it soon adds up to a nice little bonus each week.

Look at the money they save on gym membership too with all exercise they get!

How many of our customers like comment no. 4, will try one of our many competitors and stick with them?

my guess is after a trial run missing goods , damaged items and general delivery times as very few deliver on saturday unless you pay a premium ..........not many and those that do come back as soon as any dispute is settled

vote yes

You need to understand that not everything that we deliver to the door needs to be. For example, companies could decide not to advertise via the post and use newspapers, TV, Radio, Magazines, Internet, E-Mail, Text Message, posters etc.

Many of your reasons for customers returning to us are not applicable with the above alternatives.

What IS applicable is value, which is what we can offer, but not when there is a strike.

Vote NO.

It"s strange that the first radio interview I did on day one of the London strike was about whether anyone really was bothered about mail strikes or indeed if anyone relied on mail anymore.

whereas on day 12 of strike action and with national ballot papers the problems the mail strike is causing is one of the most covered meida stories.

Of course some of the public will not support us. But because we sereve the public every single day we have a massive advantage over management its that most of the public we deliver to like us.

As for the DOM well I hope you understand if we go part time you will do to. I hope you understand if they close our penison scheme they will close yours too. I hope you know if they close delivery offices in favour of these now larger centres of exicelence you will lose jobs as well. If they no longer wish to increase our terms and condiitons they will not improve yours either.

So our members will contiue to fight for a future and that includes taking strike action and voting yes.

Do you understand the concept of Striking?

Post by andy2007 »

DOM. I'm quite sure that we will loose some Customers to the Competition. That's why RM need to make an effort with the negotiations, instead of just lecturing, and imposing EA. That's the whole point of a Strike: To cause as much disruption, and cost, for the Employer, as possible.

RM Management have a stark choice: Negotiate, rather than just lecturing, and imposing EA. Or loose money, and potentially Customers too. If we loose too many Customers, then of course, our jobs will be on the line. We're not nieve enough to think that there aren't risks to this type of action. But if we loose Posties, due to lack of work. Then we'll need less Managers, and there won't be as much money available for the multi-million Pound Bonuses for the Fat Cats, either. :hmmmm

We don't Strike to cause problems for the Public, or other Businesses. They're just unfortunate enough to be caught in the cross-fire. This is between the CWU (us), and the Government, and Fat Cats. Who're making such a mess of Royal Mail! :hmmmm

You can hardly describe balloting for strike action as being caught in the cross fire.

Well over £300 per week after tax?

Not me. Try £262 for 40 hours.

Its odd that for a service that so many people seem not to care about juidging by some comments in the press, theres an awful lot of agro out there.

If Royal Mail had fulfilled it's obligation to the 2007-2009 Pay and Modernization Agreement the 'for', 'against' and 'misinformed' comments above would have been rendered worthless, along with the 'perspective' you choose, any 'ducking' and 'hostility', as the current industrial action and forthcoming national ballot would not be necessary.

Well, just to clarify: Teebs is right. What I meant, was that they are getting caught up in the crossfire, in the battles between RM and the CWU (us).
