Around 9,000 postmen and women in West Yorkshire will today be balloted over strike action.
A national strike of 120,000 postal workers could be imminent after the Communication Workers' Union announced the vote as part of long-running row over pay, jobs and services.
The dispute has already sparked walkouts across the country over the past few months.
The result of the ballot is due early next month.
Paul Clays, regional secretary of CWU, told the YEP: "The first (strike] could be within seven days of the result of the ballot.
"Our members are all in favour of modernisation but the version that is being put to us is that people will be getting their post later and postmen and women will be sent out carrying twice as much as they used to.
"The workforce is the biggest asset of this service but they are not being listened to."
Deputy general secretary Dave Ward said: "Without agreement there can be no successful change in Royal Mail. Postal workers are striking to defend future services as well as for jobs and modern conditions."
A number of business groups have urged the Government to intervene in the dispute which has already caused a backlog of undelivered mail.
