Postal workers strike in Swindon

About 70 Royal Mail delivery drivers are on strike in Swindon in support of a dispute over modernisation plans.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said the 24 hour stoppage had public support.

Kevin Beazer from the CWU said: "This is not just about the terms and conditions of postal workers, this is about the future of the post office."

Royal Mail said while the strike action was "damaging" nationally, services had not been affected in the town.

'Pain now'

A statement from Royal Mail said: "Swindon delivery staff and processing staff at the Thames Valley Mail Centre are not taking action so local services are not affected.

"Some drivers at Swindon are set to strike on Wednesday but our contingency arrangements will continue to minimise any impact and will allow us to resume normal service quickly.

"We are again urging the CWU to stop hurting customers and to call off their strikes and provide customers with the service they need and expect from Royal Mail."

But Mr Beazer of the CWU said: There is "a little bit of pain at the moment but it'll be lot more pain if we don't defend the current service that we've got."
