TALL ORDER: Re: Roy Bainbridge's letter regarding Royal Mail (The Sentinel, September 9). Thanks for your support Roy, but here is a more up-to-date timetable for delivery workers. We start work at 5.45am, spend our first half an hour sorting the mail on our own walk (delivery) if it has arrived from Wolverhampton.

At about 6.15am we start to sort out mail for all areas (ST1/2/4). We do that for two hours or more. At approximately 8.30am we go back to continue sorting the mail for our own walk.

Some time before 10am we try to get a 40 minute break, this is difficult for some postmen as they have to be ready to catch the transport out, which has to leave at specific times as the drivers have their own deliveries to make.

Approximately 10am to 10.30am we leave the office to start our delivery, which takes from three to three-and-a-half hours. This consists of four to five bags of mail, some weighing as much as 16 kilos (34lbs).

Not a chance of tea and toast while out nowadays Roy. I too have now completed over 35 years of service with Royal Mail. I also remember Walter Holmes (aka The Fixer) but that was a long time ago.

We have never had deliveries covering such large areas, with such huge volumes of mail to deliver. These are not complaints just facts that I thought needed pointing out, in contrast to Roy's tea and toast scenario.
