Mold Postman Paul Savage's murder case re-opened - Police Appeal

Earlier this year North Wales Police re-opened the murder investigation of Mold Postman Paul Savage which occurred six years ago but remains unsolved. The brutal murder is being reinvestigated by a special team of officers.

At 7.15am on the cold wintry morning of Tuesday February 4th 2003, Postman Paul Savage was doing his normal delivery round in the Clayton Road area of Mold in Flintshire, North Wales. He had just delivered the mail to a house called 'Coleshill' on Clayton Road when he was attacked and savagely beaten by two men wearing hooded tops and left dying in a pool of blood. The two men were seen by the householder, after the attack, standing near the Postman's bike, which was leaning against one of the gate pillars, before they ran off. The two hooded individuals were seen again running down the hill on Clayton Road away from the crime scene towards the junction with Queens Park. When the occupant of the house went out to his car that he saw the body of Paul Savage lying on the snow covered pavement. He had sustained serious head injuries and was unconscious. The 30-year-old Postman was taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital, but at 10.55am that day the married father of a young daughter was pronounced dead and his life support machine was turned off. There were several sightings of two hooded suspects loitering and having been seen prior to the attack and afterwards in an alley way which runs between Beech Drive, Cedar Grove and Elm Drive.

Over the past six years an extensive investigation has been undertaken, but to date no-one has ever been charged with Paul Savage's brutal murder and a £100,000 reward is being offered by police for information which leads to a conviction. The Police have appealed for help to raise awareness that investigations into the offence are still continuing. On the fifth anniversary of the crime the reward was increased from £25,000 to £100,000.

The police detectives have been revisiting all avenues of enquiry in a bid to establish if any new investigative opportunities have arisen. They believe the answers still lie in the Mold area. Officers have been re-examining evidence and statements in a bid to renew the appeal to anyone who may have the key information that will bring the offenders to justice. Detectives believe that apart from those directly involved in the attack, other people in and around Mold have evidence which could prove useful to the enquiry. Police have stated that there is still time for people to come forward and tell them the truth. They confirmed that the investigation has not and will not close until the case is resolved.

Mr Savage's mother, June, who lives in Wythenshawe, has campaigned tirelessly to bring her son's killers to justice and has even spent weekends in the town trying to encourage people to come forward with information. In 2007 she suffered another blow when her husband Lance lost his battle with cancer.

The Police and Paul Savage's mother want to gain the support of the community and are hoping that now we are six years on, attitudes have changed and local people will feel more able and confident in speaking to local police officers and their community support officers and they are appealing to those people who may have seen something to come forward. They added that we all need to bring the people responsible to justice and then allow the local community and Paul's family to move on, safe in the knowledge that people were willing to stand up for what is right.

Police want people to cast their minds back to the morning of Tuesday February 4th 2003. Clayton Road is described as a residential area. It is a well used road that services a large housing estate. At the time of the offence it was still dark, but the area was well lit. There was a light covering of snow on the ground and traffic had started to flow as people commuted to work. Police are still keen to speak to anyone who may recall seeing two men leaving the crime scene wearing dark hooded tops and making their way to the shopping area on the nearby estate.

A baton, which appeared to have been manufactured from part of a handrail, is believed to have been one of the weapons used during the callous attack. It was recovered from a nearby drain, but any other weapons that may have been used remain outstanding.

Royal Mail has delivered leaflets to households in the area appealing to anyone who may have any information relating to the callous murder to come forward.

The Police want people to tell them what they know, and in the strictest confidence if necessary. They explained that there is now legislation in place to provide support and protection to anyone who holds any information that will lead to the arrest and conviction of Paul Savage's killers.
