Yorkshire: Strike set to hit postal services

POSTAL services are expected to be hit tomorrow as drivers at Yorkshire's main mail distribution centre take part in another day of strike action.
The transport workers at Royal Mail's Normanton depot are among staff from 16 depots around the country taking part in a 24-hour strike starting at 4am.

It is the second one-day strike following on from action taken last Wednesday. The dispute is over proposed changes to pay and shift patterns which the drivers say could leave some workers up to £9,000 out of pocket.

Dave Hutchinson, area distribution representative of the Communications' Workers Union, said last week's strike had been well supported and proved effective.

Bosses at Royal Mail have said that modernisation is needed in the face of strong competition from electronic media and because of the impact of the recession on mail volumes.

Drivers at Normanton carry truck loads of mail between distribution and mail processing centres such as Stourton in Leeds.
