Royal Mail finally recognises Quinton - 160 years late

RESIDENTS in a suburb of Birmingham are celebrating after the Royal Mail finally officially recognised that they exist.

In November Quinton will mark its 100th anniversary of joining Birmingham.

But it was only this month that the Royal Mail recognised Quinton as an official postal address.

Despite being mentioned as far back as 1840 when it was referred to as The Quinton, and annexed by Birmingham in 1909, the suburb did not exist as far as the Royal Mail was concerned.

Despite people putting “Quinton, Birmingham” and adding the B32 postcode, it was not recognised.

But this summer the postal service consulted with 6,072 households across the suburb to ask if they had any objections to the name “Quinton” being added to their postal addresses.

Less than one per cent did and so the alteration has duly gone ahead.

The Royal Mail database on which they store and maintain UK postal addresses has now been amended so the change will start filtering through to organisations which access this data.

Meanwhile households across Quinton have been notified of the change by Royal Mail and will shortly be receiving a small supply of address labels each to help them notify friends and relatives about their “new” location.

Edgbaston Constituency chairman, Coun Deirdre Alden, said: “Quinton has a proud history and I’m delighted Royal Mail have acknowledged its existence officially in this way.”

While Quinton resident, Jim Nicholl, said: “This coming November, Quinton celebrates 100 years of its annexation to Birmingham, so it’s great this has happened in our centenary year.”
