Post Office guilty of 'slamming'

Post by NEWS »

The Post Office has been found guilty by telecoms regulator Ofcom of mis-selling its landline phone business to customers.

The watchdog began an investigation in December following complaints from customers who thought they were requesting information but found they had signed up to change their telephone provider to the Post Office's HomePhone service.

The practice of switching customers without their knowledge or agreement is known as slamming.

Ofcom found that the Post Office had failed to ensure that its sales agents gave factual and accurate information with regard to various aspects of its HomePhone service and sales process, failed to ensure its sales agents explained what customers were signing up to, and failed to ensure sales agents took special care with vulnerable customers, despite having a commitment to 'take special care' in relation to such customers.

Ofcom said its own investigation and the high level of complaints provided reasonable grounds for believing the Post Office has not complied with the provisions of its code of practice for sales and marketing activity.

The Post Office could face a fine of up to 10% of HomePhone's annual sales, which are not publicly disclosed. It has until 16 July to appeal.
