Post left in Goring wheelie bin

EVERY day, a bag stuffed full of post is dropped off to a Goring street and left unsecured and unattended until the postman is ready to collect his next load and finish his rounds.

The large postbag sits in North Avenue for up to an hour after being dropped off at the location by a Royal Mail van.

Viv Langham noticed the postbag was being left in her elderly neighbour's car port next to his wheelie bin and became suspicious.

"At first, I thought it was empty, but when I looked inside, it was full of people's post and packages," said 53-year-old Viv.

"I couldn't believe it was left there completely unsecured and visible to people from the street."

Viv spoke to other neighbours, who said Royal Mail did have an arrangement with an elderly woman who kept the postbag secure for them.

But ever since she died, the bag has been left in the man's front garden.

Theft risk

She said: "It's very worrying. There's the risk of people's identities being stolen from their personal and banking documents, also it is disgusting that our private mail, which belongs to us, is being left so carelessly."

Royal Mail said: "Mail drop-points are an operational feature which enables us to assist our delivery officers by transporting mail for their rounds to a secure point.

"A recent change in arrangements meant the drop-point in North Avenue was no longer secure and it should not have been used.

"This is now being stopped and we are grateful to our customers for bringing this to our attention."
