NO POSTED mail was collected in North Somerset yesterday (Thurs) as strike action in Bristol affected the region's service.

More than 1,000 postal workers at the Bristol Mail Centre in Filton are taking part in a walk-out today in a dispute over Royal Mail modernisation plans.

Postmen are not on strike, but mail was not collected in the BS postcode area because it could not be processed today.

The service will resume today because industrial action in Filton is expected to end tonight at 8pm.

Communication and Workers Union (CWU) Bristol secretary Dave Wilshire said: "People who posted yesterday should expect up to three days delay to their post.

"The strike support in Filton has been strong and no work has taken place on the premise, causing disruption to the area.

"We are taking this action because Royal Mail is steamrolling forward plans which will cut jobs, worsen conditions and hurt the service."

Royal Mail is reportedly considering axing one in 10 of the 160,000 national workforce to reduce costs by 10 per cent.

A spokesman said: "Industrial action will not modernise Royal Mail - it will simply disrupt the service to which customers are entitled, lead to an even greater loss of business and leave the firm far less able to protect full-time jobs.
