Royal Mail site could become temporary car park

ABOUT 500 new parking spaces could be created on the city's old Royal Mail site if plans to create a temporary car park get the green light.
A planning application has been submitted to Peterborough City Council to knock down the old sorting office in Bourges Boulevard, Peterborough, to build a surface level car park consisting of up to 500 spaces.

ING Real Estate Development UK (Peterborough Limited) believes there is a need for additional parking in this particular area of the city, and hopes to provide the 500 spaces on the 3.19 acre site, which will be close enough for railway commuters, for a temporary period of five years.

The Local Transport Plan (2006-2011), identified in March 2006, pointed out that there was an urgent need for additional parking for users of the railway station and that an additional 1,060 spaces will be permitted at the railway station to meet growth projections.

Development Manager at ING Real Estate Tim Webb said: "The temporary nature of this proposal means there will be no risk to the longer term plan for the comprehensive redevelopment of this area, particularly as it is recognised that it will take a considerable amount of time for the various sites to be assembled and developed."

The station quarter – one of the gateways to Peterborough – is set to be given a facelift under multi-million pound plans to create a high-quality entrance to the city.

As part of the plans, the 22 hectare site surrounding the area will be transformed and will include a station makeover, a new multi-storey car park with 1,000 spaces, and a footbridge linking Bourges Boulevard with the city's planned £450 million North Westgate shopping development.

Mr Webb added: "Elements of the Royal Mail site are vacant and there is a potential for it to fall into a state of disrepair, but there is a clear and identified need for parking in this part of Peterborough.

"Our plan will provide much-needed parking accommodation, immediately adjacent to the railway station.

"It will deliver a short term, economic use for a redundant site, and will not prejudice the long-term aspirations of Peterborough City Council, for a comprehensive redevelopment of this site and surroundings."
