Royal Mail gets my vote of thanks

I offer today a minor item of encouraging news in the form of a letter which I wrote to the Post Office recently.

Hopefully it may amuse some folk.

'To The Royal Mail . . .

No, this is nothing to do with HRH, but everything to do with the administration of the Post Office. Perhaps it may be the case that, because it is so easy to complain, too many metaphorical brickbats are hurled. Today in redressing the balance I present a metaphorical bouquet to members of staff at the post office.

My wife was surprised to receive from Royal Mail a letter originating from the Plymouth office addressed to "Granny" which began....

"Dear Customer,

We very much regret that the enclosed items was found loose in our sorting office. We have sent it on to you since we believe you are the owner."

The item concerned was an Easter card together with a genuine £5 currency note complete with the usual portrait of Her Majesty, the Queen.

It is well known that Royal recognition is made of the feat of managing to live to the age of 100 years, but my wife is not generally known as 'granny' neither is she yet a centenarian.. And an Easter card?

But suddenly the Easter card looked familiar – and the penny dropped.

Some days ago my wife had used a single envelope to send to our granddaughter. . .

1) A 'thank you; note. 2) An Easter card. 3) a five pound note as a substitute for a chocolate egg!

Our grandson, who lives elsewhere, duly received his Easter card and a £5 note but his sister, so I am told, was rather peeved to have in the envelope only the 'thank you' note!

How easy and how tempting it must have been for post office workers to ignore the rules and regulations of the company. My wife and I are most appreciative of their devotion to duty as is also our granddaughter who, at the second attempt, now is in possession of the appropriate picture of Her Majesty the Queen though not, this year, of a chocolate egg.

I am confident that she will find a good use for the portrait!

Thank you Royal Mail'.
