Further strike action in London

Post by Martin Walsh »

Notices were served to Royal Mail yesterday to inform them that all London Delivery Offices with the exception of W1 ,WC and EC will be out on strike next saturday 25th July . West End delivery will be out on strike on Monday 27th and the Mail centres and Vocs will be out on Tuesday 28th July and RDCs on 29th.

London Reps are meeting on Monday to discuss further action as Royal Mail continues to push ahead with executive action across London and breaking National Agreements.

On Tuesday there is a joint PEC and Divisonal Reps meeting where there will be a call for a national ballot which Dave Ward confirmed at the mass members meeting in Central Hall yesterday that the Union will be moving to a national ballot of the membership.

Yesterdays Demo was hugely successful over 500 striking postal workers marched for a future and gave in a giant postcard to Crozier asking him to resign and a giant postcard to mandleson. At unilever house Crozier had told the gards to close the gates and padlock them what a snake he was scared to meet his own workforce.

The rally was good and there was more in there then when the national union had its anti priviatisation rally a few months ago.

The battle is hotting up. The pressure is on Royal Mail and they have moved their postion in talks already this week. We are still miles from any kind of settlement but at least they now are meeting us.

Plus we have now over 500 ballot requests which is growing all the time.

We will win this dispute but we must if we go for a national ballot get a yes vote.

Our office has returned a yes vote and since has seen more shenanigans as far as royalmail is concerned but the membership is even more determined than ever now!.

In a delivery office there is a number of reasons for striking on a saturday especially in those without a high number of rententions. It is harder to get the managers from all over the Uk and it has a knock on effect for the whole week. Plus as we are meeting on Monday to discuss further action it is part of a strategy . Mail centes and Vocs and RDCs will be taking strike action on Tuesday and Wednesday. W1, WC and EC delivery offices which have the most saturday rententions will be going out on Monday and Tuesday repsecitviely.

Same as us. The union is out of touch with the shop floor. No point in London striking while everyone else carries on working. All that's happening is we do 2 day's work in one when we go back.

At the last count somewhere, there were about 400-500 offices waiting on a ballot.

Perhaps the CWU HQ could get their arse in gear.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

I know it's not much comfort, but for the past few weeks managers from the Leeds area have been
sent down to London to assist,i'm sure this has been replicated in other areas.
Not only is this an expense the business could do without,it's starting to impact on performance in
their own offices.
But more interestingly,on saturday we arrived to find virtually no flats, the machines at Leeds
mail centre had been running diverted mail from London.
My main concern is up here no-one is too keen to vote for industrial action, the branch has been
shocking in communicating with it's members, and quite frankly most people at our D.O. don't
understand why Londons gone out, even one of the managers was asking me!

Bradford AMAL are only just getting into gear as well, my DO had the first mass meeting last week for the entire branch, but they are going to other DOs over the next few days, hopefully Leeds will kick off as well and we'll have most of West Yorkshire covered.

Look sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture just becuase your own office is clear of work today does not mean its up to date. Fact is that Royal Mail have sent London`s outward work to Southampton , Chelmsford , Bournemouth, Romford , Greenford , langley , Cambridge as well as Leeds ,Sheffield.
Plus they are turning london mail centres into inward only operations proves the dispute is hurting.

This work has been sent today as believe it or not it was stored at the weekend and not sent out to delivery units. So therefore the backlog will not be arriving to the earliest till tommorrow into delivery units.

This statement that we are out of touch is simply mistaken. The reality is our action is having an effect and Royal Mail are under pressure they made a move in talks already. We are not near a deal but they have moved. The reason being is that in the current reccession bussiness are complaining to the government that they are losing money as a result of the strike hence a lot of pressure on Royal Mail.

Talks will resume later this week. The reality is that we have over 500 ballots around the country which are being proccessed and results coming in every day. However the executive action which Royal Mail are implementing every week does not allow for any respite.

In fact if we do not take action Royal Mail will introduce further executive action including out door absorbition which includes removing indivuduals from their walks in order to give all other delivery OPGs an additional 50 delivery points without any additional pay.

Now in terms of Saturday it depends on what time of office you are , if you have a lot of firms then Saturday is not an ideal day for strike action however if you have mainly residential delivery points then it is a good day to strike as Royal Mail struggles with management volunters on a saturday so it has a bigger impact and then ruins the whole weeks quality. This Saturday is part of a wider plan which incldues action later in the week which we do need to put up on here just yet but will cause maximum disruption for Royal Mail latter in the week.

When we take action we involve the area reps and the Branch secretary who involves the local rep so whilst everyone may have different views the fact is that we have to reach a joint decision on the action covering 12000 members.

We have been very successful and have the members on board hence the demo last Friday which say over a thousand postal workers either march from the temple or gather at parliment square and attend the national rally.

Lastly we have a great deal of expereicnce of indsutrial action both official and unoffical and have won many a victory including London Weighting, the £26.28 payment and many other victories so we do know what we are doing.

By all means feed your opinions to your local rep and your Branch but we have to listen to 12000 workers who feed their views to their reprsentatives rather then indivuduals. Plus the truth is that we are having an effect and the pressure is showing , off course we all want the other offices to come on board quicker but in the mean time we have to either choose to fight back or put the white flag up. I know what way our members in London have chosen and its not the white flag its to come out fighting.

Yesterdays Demo was hugely successful over 500 striking postal workers marched for a future and gave in a giant postcard to Crozier asking him to resign and a giant postcard to mandleson asking him to shoot himself in the head.
I am a postman and I kept the faith and I kept voting, not for new labour but for the working man.
