Plans to make trade union blacklisting illegal

A consultation has been launched on plans to make it illegal for trade union members to be denied employment through secret blacklists. If you want to have your say on the new proposals, you must do so before 18 August 2009.

Trade union blacklisting consultation

The government has published proposals to make it illegal for trade union members to be denied employment through secret blacklists.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said: ""Blacklisting someone because they are a member of a trade union is totally unacceptable.
"

""I am determined to act quickly to stamp out this despicable practice. Today's proposals outline how we will deliver this.""

The main proposals are:

* to make it illegal for organisations to refuse employment or sack individuals for being on a blacklist
* to make it illegal for employment agencies to refuse to provide a service because someone is on a blacklist
* to allow individuals or unions to sue those who compile, distribute or use blacklists

This consultation will run for only six weeks to allow new legislation to be brought in as soon as possible.

If you want to have your say on the new proposals, you must do so before 18 August 2009.
