First aid skills come flooding back as postman saves his wife's life

Postman Glynn Evans' first aid skills saved his wife's life when she collapsed at their home at Lurgashall.
Patsy Evans was sitting back enjoying a cup of coffee when she had a severe heart attack.

It had been 11 years since Glynn, 61, had done his last first aid refresher course, but everything he had learned came flooding back.

He said: "I could see she wasn't breathing and there was no pulse, and I phoned for an ambulance and a doctor.Our youngest son Aaron, who was at home, helped me lift Patsy on to the floor and I started CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation).

"I learned it when I was working for RMC at the sandpit at Pendean and we were sent on update courses every two years.

"I did not have to think, I just knew what to do."

Glynn worked for seven or eight minutes to get Patsy breathing.

"Every now and then she gave a low gasp. The lady at ambulance control kept talking on the phone. I just kept going until the doctor arrived."

Patsy, 59, was airlifted to hospital in Brighton where she underwent surgery.

To the astonishment of Glynn, their three sons and the rest of the family, she made a rapid recovery and in less than three months was back at her cleaning job at Midhurst Rother College.

"I am fine. I didn't know anything about what went on. The first I knew was when I was in hospital," she said.

Glynn, who is a postman at Haslemere, says he recommends anyone who gets the chance to do a first aid course.

"Doing CPR is something I have never forgotten. I know you think you will never need it, especially in your own home.

"But it saved Patsy's life. There is no way she would have come back without it."
