NEWCASTLE is home to a postbox where your mail will never reach its destination.
And the city centre unit is set to be scrapped after having never received a single letter.
Shoppers and workers alike called on Royal Mail to install a new box in Newcastle after the city’s former post office closed.
And they duly obliged, placing the facility on Blackett Street, near to the entrance of the Fenwick department store.
But posties were forbidden from collecting letters from the box because their vans are not allowed to drive on the road leading up to it.
Now, Royal Mail chiefs have been forced into looking for a fresh location nearby.
Meanwhile, every day scores of passers-by continue to be confused by the post box that won’t let you deposit any letters.
Peter Harker runs the Quickstitch store yards from the site, in the Eldon Square shopping mall.
He said: “For starters, I don’t think the post office should have been closed. It’s been moved to WH Smith on Northumberland Street but that is too small to cater for all the people who wish to use it.
“The new post box is near a side road, where cars and taxis usually stop for drop-offs, despite the double yellow lines, so I don’t see why the postal vans couldn’t be allowed to use the box. If the public stop for taxis and cars who are collecting or dropping-off, then surely allowances should be made for postal vans.”
The Chronicle spent half an hour by the new post box and watched as 10 people tried to drop-off letters.
But all were left scratching their heads after being blocked.
Royal Mail and Newcastle City Council have confirmed they are in discussions about a new location.
A council spokesman said: “We can confirm that we are discussing with the Royal Mail moving a post box outside Fenwick to another site near Grey’s Monument, which would be easier for their vans to access. They are happy with this approach and we are confident a new location will be agreed shortly.”

Councils and logical thinking don't always go together, surely now that they have control over parkings an dissuing ticket thereof, they can make exemptions for RM vehicles.
