MAIL workers will be balloted today about industrial action over a transfer of work in the region.
Ballot papers will be sent to 300 Communication Workers Union members at Darlington Mail Centre over the move to Tyneside.
Branch secretary Brett Giroux said: “Our members are deeply unhappy that their hard work, high efficiency and excellent quality of service have been ignored by Royal Mail in this decision to move work from Darlington to Tyneside.
“We have continued to press our case that the work should remain in Darlington, with offers to discuss alternatives to the transfer of the work being flatly refused by Royal Mail.
“We have been in contact with Alan Milburn MP, who has also written to Royal Mail outlining his concerns at the decision to move the work from Darlington.
“The amount of work to be taken from Darlington is something in the region of 100,000 items, which has led to six workers on short term contracts being made redundant, but, further job cuts have been proposed.
“This is a huge concern for this branch and the members over what the future might hold for Darlington Mail Centre.”
The ballot will close on Monday, July 6.
