A DOG which was reported to have attacked several people was shot by a police marksman, but was able to escape and was later put down by a vet.
The incident happened in the Barkerhouse Road area of Nelson and at least four armed officers were involved in the battle to stop the dog attacking people.
The animal, which lived at a house in Rowland Avenue, was described by police as a pitbull cross. Officers were called by a dog warden concerned about the dangerous dog.
There were reports it had bitten a postman and two children and it was said to be a "mad dog".
The dog was spotted in Clough Road and shot in the shoulder at a garage site, but the injury was not fatal and the dog ran off. That led to a larger search, with up to nine police vehicles in the area.
It was seen in Priory Chase but eventually the dog was tracked down to the rear garden of its Rowland Avenue home.
It was brought under control on a catch pole but was very aggressive. A vet was called out to treat the dog and ended up putting it down.
The incident, which happened around 11 a.m. on Monday last week, came after police had various reports of attacks by the dog.

Yes you're right dgp, I have a dog as everyone must know and whilst out walking him I see skinhead yobs with Staffies, and Pit Bull type dogs with wide metal studded collars strolling around in vest tops with tattoos - the dog seems to be just another accessory , whereas my dog is my best pal, they don't know anything of care for the animal and so it is no wonder the dogs are aggressive.disgruntledpostie1 wrote:I'd like to put down the tattooed f***wit that made the dog aggressive

I often equate those dogs with drugs - you wonder how they can afford to keep those rotties , alsatians etc on benefitsdvbuk55 wrote:Yes you're right dgp, I have a dog as everyone must know and whilst out walking him I see skinhead yobs with Staffies, and Pit Bull type dogs with wide metal studded collars strolling around in vest tops with tattoos - the dog seems to be just another accessory , whereas my dog is my best pal, they don't know anything of care for the animal and so it is no wonder the dogs are aggressive.disgruntledpostie1 wrote:I'd like to put down the tattooed f***wit that made the dog aggressive

How do they get the vest tops on the dog? How do they tattoo it?dvbuk55 wrote:Yes you're right dgp, I have a dog as everyone must know and whilst out walking him I see skinhead yobs with Staffies, and Pit Bull type dogs with wide metal studded collars strolling around in vest tops with tattoos - the dog seems to be just another accessory , whereas my dog is my best pal, they don't know anything of care for the animal and so it is no wonder the dogs are aggressive.disgruntledpostie1 wrote:I'd like to put down the tattooed f***wit that made the dog aggressive
Seriously though, IMO the owners should be muzzled as well as the dog.
