Royal Mail staff sign up for extra skills

More than 600 Royal Mail staff in Bradford will be helped to improve their skills following the launch of a trade union digital learning initiative.

The SPACE learning centre is a project with the Communication Workers Union and ‘unionlearn’, the TUC’s learning and skills organisation.

The Bradford project will support online learning as the centre becomes part of the TUC’s U-Net network of trade union learning centres. The Digital Divide project will enable CWU members and their families who live and work in remote areas to access learning.

It was launched locally by mail centre manager Simon Scott, CWU education officer Trish Lavelle and unionlearn regional manager Dr Alan Roe.

The SPACE learning centre has enabled people to complete basic IT courses as well as the European computer driving licence. In co-operation with The Reading Agency, staff have taken the Six Book Challenge, with many picking up a book for the first time.

An initiative to help people stop smoking has also been successful.

Dr Roe said: “The SPACE centre has been very imaginative in the kinds of courses which have been run and the help offered to staff.

“Working with unionlearn, the NHS and Bradford TUC Education Unit, Royal Mail and the CWU have really worked hard to offer Bradford staff the chance to change their lives through learning.”

CWU North East project worker Andy Sorton said: “The long-term aims and objectives of this Digital Divide project are to break down learning barriers that exist for people who work in smaller and often more remote workplaces within Royal Mail and BT.

“Through learndirect, which offers online learning, we are able to extend the excellent work already carried out by union learning representatives.”

So they're only providing basic courses, to improve your career prospects, if you leave RM. That's little better than the last time they tried this!

Why can't they provide challenging courses?
What about BTECs, A-Levels, etc.?

Still. At least it's not insulting, like the one they tried last time. Which only offered basic English and maths courses.
