Nantwich councillors take up Crewe's Royal Mail sorting office fight

NANTWICH councillors have joined the fight to save the Weston Road sorting office, Crewe.

Royal Mail is planning to close the Crewe site and transfer work to a new mail centre in Warrington.

Crewe councillors and unions have been trying to resist the move, arguing up to 600 jobs could be lost as many would not be able to afford to commute.

Nantwich Town Council has written to Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier.

Its letter states: “The change would inevitably have an adverse effect on the local economy. It would also mean that for local businesses and organisations like ourselves, post will be delivered later and need to be collected earlier.

“Most significant, local jobs will be lost, by redundancies and the inability of some employees to travel to Warrington.

“This type of piece-meal approach, when the whole future of the Royal Mail is under consideration, is not fully thought out.”
