Royal Mail paid out more than £2 million in compensation in just three months for lost mail and other delivery problems after pay outs increased by a third.
More than 250,000 complaints were received and completed in the first three months of this year resulting in recompense to customers of £2.12 million.
Some £1.5 million of that was for lost mail relating to more than 102,000 complaints.
The compensation represented a 35 per cent increase on the £1.65 million paid out in the last three months of 2008, the Royal Mail quarterly quality of service report shows.
However, a spokesman for the company said a rise in the fourth quarter was common because the sharp increase in deliveries over the Christmas period often led to more complaints, which are not received until the following quarter.
Overall, some £9.36 million was paid out in compensation in 2008/09 compared with £12 million in the previous year.
The company insisted the report also showed targets for first and second class mail delivery were met, along with all of the targets for business bulk mail in the 2008-09 financial year.
It found 93 per cent of First Class mail arrived the day after posting and 98.5 per cent of Second Class mail arrived on time within three working days after posting.
Mark Higson, managing director of Royal Mail Letters, said: "I'm proud of the performance of Royal Mail's postmen and women.
"The quality service to customers last financial year came as we made significant progress modernising the company and we are determined to keep delivering the best possible service as we continue transforming Royal Mail to ensure it competes successfully in an open competitive market."
