NANTWICH councillors have written to Royal Mail bosses urging them to reconsider closing the Weston Road sorting office in Crewe.
The company is planning to close the Crewe site, transferring work to a new mail centre in Warrington.
Union bosses and local politicians have been battling against the move insisting it could mean the loss of up to 600 jobs in the area as most workers would be unable to afford the travel costs of transferring to Warrington.
Now Nantwich town councillors have joined the debate, writing to Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier.
The letter states: “The change would inevitably have an adverse effect on the local economy.
“It would also mean that for local businesses and organisations like ourselves, post will be delivered later and need to be collected earlier.
“Most significantly, local jobs will be lost, by redundancies and the inability of some employees to travel to Warrington.
“This type of piece-meal approach, when the whole future of the Royal Mail is under consideration, is not fully thought out.
“The Town Council would request that this proposal is deferred or at least put ‘on hold’ until the initial approach to the Royal Mail network is clear.
“We fully support the views of the local MP and the union speaking for those affected by these plans.”
