FURIOUS postmen will march from Farnworth to Horwich to protest about the closure of their sorting office and the increased travel for workers who are relocated.
Farnworth Royal Mail centre, in Stonehill Road, is due to close next year, making about 400 people redundant. The office will be moved to Horwich in August, which means the postmen who remain, most of whom live in Farnworth, will have to travel more than 10 miles to Horwich before coming back to deliver mail.
The workers claim the move will hit delivery times and have been protesting against the move since it was announced last year. They want the decision reversed.
One postman, who asked not to be named, said: “We’ve been treated very badly. The morale in the office is zero.”
“Royal Mail’s not listening to us, so we want to show the public what we’ll have to do every day.”
The walkers will meet at 9am on Sunday outside Farnworth bus station, before setting off on the 10 mile trek to the Horwich delivery office.
Royal Mail said the move to Horwich would not hit delivery times. It plans to invest £51 million in a regional distribution centre and four delivery offices.
