RESIDENTS in Moulton have secured a victory after the village mail sorting office was saved from closure.
Following a meeting between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers' Union, it was agreed that the delivery of mail should continue from Moulton Post Office.

The decision means that postwomen Mel Todd and Bev Gazeley, who have sorted the mail for the past 15 years, will keep their jobs although the hours for one of the roles are likely to be cut back.

"We have had a bit of a victory," said a Communication Workers Union official.

"Moulton delivery unit will not be shutting. We have reached an agreement with Royal Mail and all parties are quite happy about it."

He said the delivery of post in the village would not be affected by a cut-back of hours.

"The delivery service in Moulton has not been compromised," he added.

"Everyone will get their letters at the normal time so the quality of service will not be affected.

"We would like to thank the local community for their support. They have been fantastic."

Earlier this year, Royal Mail proposed to close Moulton sorting office – with the mail being sorted in Newmarket instead before being delivered to the village by one postworker in a van.

Furious residents immediately mounted a campaign to keep the service, with more than 500 people signing a petition which was sent to Royal Mail.

West Suffolk MP Richard Spring also threw his weight behind the campaign after receiving dozens of letters from constituents.

Postmaster Mike Dillon said everyone was very pleased with the decision.
"The system has been in operation for 50 years," he said.

"It is now going to stay the same, which was what the people of Moulton wanted.

"We do not want change and this was never going to be for the better."
